As summer stretches across The Cotswolds, there’s no better time to embrace the great outdoors. For those drawn to a more tranquil kind of adventure, paddle boarding and kayaking offer a unique way to soak up the region’s serene beauty from the water. Whether you’re seeking still lakes fringed with wildflowers or winding river routes with a pub stop along the way, The Cotswolds is home to some of the best inland paddling spots in the country. Here are some of our favourites.
A calm, crystal-clear lake set within the heart of Cotswold Water Park, Lake 32 is a haven for paddle-boarders and kayakers of all abilities. With equipment hire on-site, expert instructors, and a designated SUP course, it’s the perfect spot for both first-timers and seasoned paddlers. The natural surroundings, complete with reed beds, waterbirds, and endless skies, only enhance the sense of escape.
For a livelier atmosphere, head to Lake 86. This sandy-edged lake offers paddleboard and kayak hire alongside waterskiing and wakeboarding facilities. The wide open waters are ideal for groups or sociable paddles, while the lakeside café serves up post-paddle treats with a view.
Tucked away amongst wooded lakes, South Cerney Outdoor Centre offers a peaceful, family-friendly paddling experience. With accredited instructors and a strong safety-first ethos, it’s ideal for children or those looking to build confidence on the water. Launch from a private pontoon and glide past rushes and wildlife in one of the park’s most picturesque corners. There are also plenty of food and coffee options around the lakes for a refuel post water.
For a quieter alternative, Neigh Bridge Lake offers a truly tranquil paddle. Set amongst mature trees and tucked away from the busier lakes, it’s ideal for wildlife spotting and reflective morning sessions. Bring your own craft, pack a thermos, and enjoy the stillness of this lesser-known gem.
A meandering stretch of the Thames near its source, the river at Lechlade offers a charming alternative to lakeside paddling. Launch from the riverside and cruise past meadows, lock gates, and moored narrowboats. End your route at The Riverside pub for a well-earned drink and a bite with a view. Kayaks and paddle boards can be hired locally.
For something more guided, Wild Goose SUP near Twyning provides relaxed sessions along the scenic River Avon. Their private slipway makes for easy access, and friendly instructors offer lessons or guided tours which are ideal for newcomers. The gentle current and leafy backdrop make this a delightful, slow-paced option, with a riverside pub just a short walk away.
A full-service water sports centre offering kayak and canoe hire, beginner taster sessions, and paddling courses. Sessions launch at the lake and you have the option for guided river trips on the Avon, making this spot perfect for beginners and families alike.
From sheltered lakes to historic river routes, The Cotswolds offers some of the most peaceful and picturesque places to paddle in the UK, which also offers the opportunity for wild swimming, if that’s more your speed, you can find our location recommendations here.
